Financial Freedom for Single Mummas: Time to Rock That Budget Like a Pro

September 21, 20241 min read

Introduction:

So, you’re a single mum, middle-aged, and juggling more than a circus clown with one hand tied behind their back. Between netball pickup, library book return, work deadlines, and trying to remember the last time you had a moment to yourself, financial freedom might seem like a distant dream—like fitting into your pre-kids’ jeans. But, trust me, it’s not impossible! It is sometimes about finding someone to hold your hand and stop putting your head in the sand and pretending it will disappear.

Let’s get real: financial freedom isn’t about winning the lottery (although, wouldn’t that be nice?). It’s about managing what you have and making your money work for you. The secret? Budgeting. Yes, the “B” word. It’s like broccoli—good for you, but not exactly thrilling.

Budgeting

Start by tracking where your money goes. (Spoiler: It’s probably more on the kids’ snacks than you realized.) Next, set up an emergency fund, because if anyone knows that life throws curveballs, it’s single mums. A broken dishwasher or unexpected car repair won’t leave you in panic mode if you’ve got that cushion. Maybe even a little camping holiday or off the road Airbnb for the children and yourself.

Now, here’s where the magic happens: look for ways to boost your income. Freelance, side hustle, sell those craft projects you’ve been working on, look after a dog or assist someone on air tasker with their resume - between helping with math’s homework. You’re already a multitasking ninja!

Most importantly, give yourself a break. Financial freedom doesn’t happen overnight, but every small step counts. Besides, you’ve already mastered the art of stretching a dollar—after all, who else can make a cup of coffee last three re-heats? Keep at it, and you’ll get there!
